In Together Mode, Microsoft spilled a great deal of science analysis. To get to the bottom of it, I spoke to Microsoft's researcher Jaron Lanier.

Lanier said that you don't know where other people are on the screen while you are videoconferencing in grid mode. Together Mode solves that by establishing a collective space.

“The brain is capable of perceiving people naturally in a particular position," explained Lanier. "If someone is normally on the monitor, they seem to be rotated to their looks on the screen. This is attributable to an unacceptable look.”

How did users respond to this? Lainer notes that his analysis indicates that the preliminary findings were extremely optimistic.

"I haven't yet met [any] who choose not to use [it]," Lanier said. "No professor who wanted to use it has stopped so far."
